Our task was to find three different works and talk about
the presentation.
Work No 1:
Allan McDonald
Aperture: Cuba Street 2014, Elliot Street 2013, High Street 2013,
Pitt Street (Service lane) 2014
Four digital C prints collection of the artist
How does the
presentation affect the way you view this work?
All four of these photos are taken through windows, the
viewer of the pieces are looking out, as if from the window itself. The light in the pieces are flat, giving the
colours a softer, duller tone. A real
view of the buildings and objects. The
presentation of these frames connect the viewer with the photo. You feel a part of the scene, as if looking
out from that room.
Would you use this
type of presentation for your photography and why?
I would use this type of presentation to draw my viewers
into the scene or to delve into my subject.
The pieces were quite large prints and framed without a stroke or space
between photo and frame. Which would
allow the viewers to get close to the photos, quite confronting for portraiture
but also engaging if the subject appears mysterious or doing something
interesting.
Is there anything you
would have done differently?
Not really, I like this type of presentation, the framing
and glossy sheen of the photos were appealing and didn’t distract from the
photos I was viewing.
Work No 2:
Allan McDonald
Notes on the pleasures of looking
Notes on how a building might think
Fifty two pigment prints collection of the artist
How does the presentation affect the way you view this work?
These are smaller prints, some prints had one print and
others had two on them. They are of A4
size. My initial feeling is to try and
view this works as a whole, however because of the amount of photos (52 prints)
on display, it requires me to take my time though them and purposefully view
each individually. At times I was
distracted because there was too many.
With time constraints and a task to complete I didn’t have the time to
really go through the entire piece.
Would you use this
type of presentation for your photography and why?
I possibly wouldn’t use this type of presentation with my
work because I don’t have the scope of work that Allan McDonald has.
Is there anything you
would have done differently?
I’m not really sure, i don’t feel that the type of
photography that I will be doing will require it at this point. What I do like about this presentation is
that it encourages the viewer to slow down and really look at the work.
Work No 3:
Sam Harrison
The Crucifixion 2009
Woodcut print on paper
How does the
presentation affect the way you view this work?
It is a huge piece, which is dominates the
staircase. It is printed on 3 pieces of
woodcut print on paper. It is
confronting, emotive and awe inspiring.
I didn’t notice this piece while I was walking up the stairs, it caught
my eye as I turned to walk up the second flight of stairs. I was drawn to the sheer size of the piece
but mesmerised by the intensity and sadness of it.
Would you use this
type of presentation for your photography and why?
I would love to use this type of presentation for my
photography, but in terms of this portfolio I don’t think the ideas or concepts
of they type of genre I am considering would translate well presented in this
way.
Is there anything you
would have done differently?
No I think this presentation style suits this piece
perfectly because it gives the viewer the option of exploring every detail and
connect with the piece on their terms.
